Gli Smiths nascono a Manchester, in Inghilterra, nel 1982, grazie a un'idea del chitarrista Johnny Marr, che propone a Morrissey (Steven Patrick Morrissey, 22 maggio 1959 ex giornalista musicale di scarso successo ed ex cantante dei Nosebleed band punk fondata insieme a Billy Duffy poi nei Cult) di formare con lui un gruppo.
