La locura , la pintura y sofisticación del ballet de Frankfurt llega a Madrid.
Comprised of three artists: Konrad Ross, Ashley Wright and Thomas Bradley,
LANDBREAKERS is a performance collective driven by creative emancipation. Outside
of LB, members work independently within their respective fields of painting, drawing,
music composition, garment design and dance. As a collective, they are motivated by the
subversion of specific artistic and technical conditioning that makes them valuable within
the contemporary art framework. Their individual proficiency sets a given standard, while
the attempted transposition of that into other mediums requires genuine creative investment
and attention to ‘work’.
This investment is what drives LANDBREAKERS as a performative project. As a matter
of creative necessity, the artists are constantly transposing their skill set between mediums
and objectives. The focus is particular, on ‘making things work’ which, ironically, often
means letting go or the breaking of something. Irrespectively, there is a clear engagement
with cultural and artistic value systems, assessing contemporary concepts of virtuosity,
ingenuity, production and spirituality.
LANDBREAKERS offers itself as a framework for what is; dancers dance because they
are dancers. Dancers will also paint and draw, but this is nothing new. Contrary to the
name, the artists go beyond form identity, that which carries them as successful
professionals, into the realm of Being. The outflow of Being into doing is what connects
the seemingly ‘separate’ disciplines, and so charges the durational sessions. In this way, the
shared experience of dancing or drawing is more important than the communication of an
idea or feeling with an observer.
In order to ground this travelling project, LANDBREAKERS integrates local elements into
the performance sessions through scouting. This is an important activity the artists
undertake prior to the first session. It involves arriving several days early to collect audio
samples of the area, as well as possible objects and cultural clichés. Principally, this is
important as it offers accessibility to those locals who observe the work. It is also a simple
way for LANDBREAKERS to imbue the symbolism of places they visit with their essence;
that is, to transcend the quotidian by realising the ‘is-ness’ or potential of all things.
Especially those things we think we know.
