La comedia se localiza en Madrid y tiene como protagonistas a dos hermanas y a sus galanes, camarero y secretario de un conde respectivamente. Estas dos parejas, cuyos amores han sido secretos hasta el momento, se ven comprometidas con la aparición de otros dos pretendientes: el mismo conde, quien ansía a una de ellas, y un rico señor, quien galantea a la otra con el beneplácito del padre de la dama. Este planteamiento inicial desemboca en un juego de escondite y de identidades confundidas en el momento en que la primera de las hermanas debe intervenir para permanecer cerca de su amado.
Cuando el conde descubre que su secretario ama a la misma dama a la que corteja, intenta alejarlo de la corte, pero la dama idea una estratagema con la que consigue engañar a su padre y convencerlo de que acoja al joven camarero a quien cree un pariente del conde.
La otra hermana, por su parte, hábilmente rechaza las continuas acechanzas amorosas del rico señor, quien insiste una y otra vez pensando que es favorecido por el conde. El enredo urdido por la primera de las hermanas da pie a diversas escenas de gran comicidad, con la casa de las hermanas convertida en un lugar todos los personajes están a la merced de los engaños de las dos mujeres y sus enamorados. El enredo concluye cuando la situación llega a su límite y la inmediatez de una boda lleva a los personajes implicados a desvelar la realidad de todo lo sucedido y buscar una solución al conflicto que desemboque en un final feliz para las dos parejas protagonistas.
