Atenas. Dos hermanos, Hipólita y Leónidas, están enamorados. Ella de un joven llamado Tíndaro, él de una joven llamada Gimnasia, que, sin embargo, es… flautista. Pero ni Tíndaro ni Gimnasia son las parejas que el padre de Hipólita y Leónidas, un avaro recalcitrante, comerciante de vinos, paños y liras, desea para sus hijos. Actualmente, se encuentra de viaje de negocios. Y ha dejado a cargo de la casa a su hermana Cántara, la tía solterona que lleva más de cuarenta años esperando a Filemón, su amor de juventud, que un día salió a comprar higos y ya no volvió.

Hipólita quiere fugarse con Tíndaro, no sin antes conseguir la dote que su padre se niega a pagar. ¿Cómo conseguirlo? Mintiendo.

Leónidas quiere fugarse con Gimnasia porque un tal Degollus, general macedonio, la ha comprado para su uso y disfrute, y pretende llevársela. ¿Cómo conseguirlo? Mintiendo.

Calidoro, esclavo para todo, que ha cuidado y ha visto crecer a los dos hermanos, que, como dice él mismo «sólo le ha faltado darles la teta», se ve obligado a ayudarlos. ¿Cómo? Mintiendo.

Mientras tanto, Cántara, después de tantos años de abstinencia, se echa el mundo por montera y se enamora de un jovencito llamado Titinio, que en realidad no se llama Titinio, porque Titinio miente.

Y aparece Degollus, que tampoco resulta ser quien dice ser, porque, claro, él también miente.

Y a todas estas mentiras, sumémosles muchos piratas, y un viejo llamado Póstumo, y a Tiberia, siempre fisgona y rabiosa, y una madre misteriosa, que no se sabe muy bien qué fue de ella, y unos cuantos chipirones, y peras, muchas peras, y los maravillosos versos de Safo, y todavía más mentiras. Mentiras todas ellas urdidas para que la sangre no llegue al río y triunfe el amor. Ah, y para que Calidoro, pobre, no acabe recibiendo los palos como siempre. Aunque, ya se sabe que, siendo esclavo, no va a ser fácil.
